Following on from my last post looking at a two head starter studio lighting kit we are going to take a look at another two lighting set ups which are quick to produce during a shoot using the attachments that come with these type of kits.

The next two images use the softbox in the same way that I would use a beauty dish so the light is positioned directly in front of my subject, elevated and directed downwards to create Butterfly lighting. With the front diffuser removed I fitted a silver deflector into the umbrella tube. The deflector directs the light back into the softbox preventing any direct light from the flash tube reaching the subject.
With my subject around 1.7m from the background the softbox in this position has produced a strong three-dimensional look with good contrast and minimal spill onto the background.

The second image made use of the 16cm reflector fitted to the second head and placed behind the subject and directed slightly upwards to create a gentle vignette and provide some separation.
To achieve lighting like this the key is to get the light high enough to light the subject but reduce light spill into surrounding areas.
