Hi everyone once again I am looking at the possibilities offered by a two head starter studio lighting kit.

This time I am trying something quite different and something which would normally be produced using large strip boxes. These long slim boxes, usually 150cm and longer, make directional lighting easy so I thought, if I needed to, how could I produce this effect with small square softboxes.

You will see in the diagram of the set up that the soft boxes were placed slightly behind and to the side of the subject, directly facing the camera. Using the edge of the softbox to feather the light will create directional lighting on your subject to reveal textures.

A pair of 8’x4’ poly-boards were positioned in front of these lights to fill-in my subject.

They also acted as flags preventing the light striking the lens and reducing contrast. It was then a matter of moving the subject slightly back or forward to provide the right amount of spill onto the subject to reveal texture and tone of the body. A meter reading was taken at the side of the subject and the polyboards positioned until I achieved the amount of fill I required.

Ok so the lighting isn't perfect but it does show that with a little thought a lot can be achieved with minimal equipment.

Let me know your thoughts. ^_^
